Model results!

Today we got our wall section model back. It was a partner project. Dana and I got a 20 out of 20 on it :) AND my teacher kept it for CIDA. There is nothing new there though. Here are some pictures!

The pictures will show...the Concrete footing, the CMU foundation, the brick, the sole plate, the rim joist, the floor joists, the plywood sub floor, the gypsum board for the wall and ceiling, the fiberglass insulation, the ceiling joists, the rafters and the shingles, the siding, the gutters...and everything else that goes into a house :) or building. Dana added some cute carpet, wall paper, and a wall painting as well!

Only 10 more days left in the semester!

With only a few days left until I am free from this semester I am cramming in a CAD project and procrastinating on Project 2 for Principles of Interior Design. The Principles of Design project 2 includes a bunch of drawings and such. Bleh. I started my CAD project today and didn’t get very far so I am a little nervous about that. However I have our class time on Wednesday and all day Friday after my House Design exam to finish it up. I really want to have it done by Friday evening so I can study for my exams on Tuesday. Monday and Wednesday of next week I will be working on that stupid project 2...which is due at 3pm on Thursday (the last day!!!). Have I mentioned how excited I am that the end of this semester is near!? I am so excited to have May off and then have one class in June and one class in July, along with working 5 days a week…yup it is going to be a busy summer but a lot of fun! I can’t wait!

Here is some of my CAD work...I really like CAD, it is more of what I have wanted to do than anything else I have been doing this semester. This is one of our in class exercises. TEST ONE!! This is one of my last exercises in CAD. It was a part of another chapter, in which we did a floor plan of an office building. This is the elevation of the cabinets in the office building's conference room. This was a project that my teacher drew up a table and we had to do the plan view and the side elevation of it...all on our own. Most of our exercises this semester had step by step instructions to teach us how to do different things but this was an exercise to teach us how to think...I think. Haha.

NCIDQ link!

Hello all!!

I hope everyone had a good weekend! I had a wonderful and stress free weekend because of all the work that I got done on Thursday and Friday!! You can see one of the projects in the previous blog but the other was a drawing assignment for my house design class. I will try to get some pictures up of that soon!!

I am going to keep this blog short but my teacher sent us this email that included this website that you can go to and see some of the parts of constructing a building that an Interior Designer actually deals with. Most of the time we work with Architects and contractors and this website shows exactly where that line is drawn between our work and theirs. I hope you enjoy!!

http://www.reingoldweb.com/ncidq/

Then click on “View plan” and it will instruct you from there!!

Thank you all for reading,
Emily

Final project-IDES 3720

Hello!!
Since the last time I wrote. I went to turn in my project but my perfectionist teacher who doesn’t teach told us our projects were horrible and gave us time to “fix” our projects. However, my board was one of the best in the class :) and I am thinking I won’t fix too much of my other drawings. I think they are good and if she doesn’t then I guess if she wants to take points off then so be it. I now have a new project that I am posting pictures of, mind you we used samples from our resource library which is of donated samples so some are quite old and ugly but I made the best of it.We had to pick out wall coverings and paint and carpet for a house and then make a board, so here are some pictures of my masterpiece!!

we have limited resources so the paper and stuff is a little out dated and not very attractive but the point was to have it all match and be in the same color scheme which I think I accomplished.

Designer versus Decorator

The professional interior designer is qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the safety, function, and quality of interior spaces. The interior designer effectively communicates knowledge of building codes and technology for the purposes of improving the quality of life, increasing productivity and protecting the health, safety and welfare of those who occupy the spaces they design.

When differentiating Design to Decorating a certified/registered/licensed Interior Designer evaluates aesthetics, finish durability, structurally stability for usage, appropriateness of draw glides, pulls and hinges used, appropriateness of horizontal surface material and if endangered species are used in the case of furniture or case goods. While and interior DECORATOR selects style, finish and proportion based upon usage.

In the case of window coverings, a certified/registered/licensed Interior Designer evaluates appropriate type and style based upon sun and light control, privacy, flammability, acoustic properties, and control system but an Interior DECORATOR would select color and texture while designing style of window colorings. A certified/registered/licensed Interior Designer draws floor plans showing location of furniture to meet not only client requirements, but also the Americans with Disabilities ACT [ADA], egress, and fire code requirements while an Interior DECORATOR draws plan showing location of furniture to meet client requirements. In the lighting/electrical category, a certified/registered/licensed Interior Designer draws plans showing location of light fixtures, switch/dimmer locations, prepares fixture and lamp schedule, and indicates electrical locations with consideration for GFI requirements. An interior DECORATOR selects decorative lighting fixtures. These are only a few of the points that set Interior Designers from Interior DECORATORS.

People don’t understand the difference. When I tell someone I am an Interior Design student I get one of 2 responses “Oh…cool.” (Then changes the subject) “REALLY?! You need to come over to my house and help me!” What people don’t realize is that Interior Designers deal with the FUNCTION of a space over the aesthetically pleasing part of a space. NCIDQ (National Council of Interior Design Qualification) which is the council that makes the test and such for certification of Interior Designers. Anyways, they have this website http://www.reingoldweb.com/ncidq/ that you can go to and take a visual tour of a space and see what roles and Interior Designer plays in the construction of a space. Check it out.

This blog will be for me to show my family and my friends just what I am doing in school…plus I will use it to help update anyone who wants to know about the “Tennessee Interior Design Act of 2009” which is trying to set some more boandries to help those of us who are going to school to become an interior designer be set apart from the Interior Decorators of the world. We should be credited for our schooling! I didn’t spend 15 hours on my current project for nothing!!
For our project one, we had to design a student design studio for a fellow classmate. My client was Jessica and I was her client. Here are some pictures of the finished product that I designed for her!

The REAR elevation of the design studio.

The right side elevation of the design studio.

The left side elevation of the design studio.

The front elevation of the design studio.

Design Studio Floorplan. My lettering was a little messy at this point of the project.

This is an elevation of the Kitchenette in the space. It has a mini fridge!

This is an elevation of the drafting room with storage on both sides for her drawings. Our drawings are suppose to be stored laying flat so I though these would be a good way to allow that.

This is an elevation of the wall in the meeting room where a projection screen will be used along with a built in storage unit below it to store her client boxes along with anything else she may need to put in the drawers.

This is an elevation of the built in storage unit that I designed for her work room. The doors on the unit will be the different turquoise colors and the rest will be white. She wanted modern she got modern!

This is my presentation board all finished!!
