Hello!!
I have been a busy little bee but I am writing to let everyone know that next Saturday we have our annual MTSU Student Chapter ASID/IIDA Interior Design Student Showcase. I have been every year to observe all the upper course work and now, it is my turn to show off my work!! I will have a whole 6ft table to myself to put up any work that I would like to show off to friends and family!! I was originally going to share the table with a friend of mine but we got to thinking about what we wanted to put on the tables and decided that it may be best if we just have a table to ourselves!! As of now I am going to put up 5 of my material and finishes boards, one board with my rendered floorplan and perspective, 4 of my mini residential boards, and a few print outs of my photoshop/sketchup work. I have to go buy some easels to make all of this fit on the table!! On top of getting everything ready for next weekend, I also have 4 tests, 2 quizzes and a drawing due :( so much work so little time!! Well I just had a moment to blog really fast now I must get back to studying!! Pictures of the showcase will come with my next post!
Love you all. Thanks for reading.

Spring 2010
Well, I should be graduating at the end of this semester but unfortunately I have another year after this semester :( That's ok, at least I will be able to say that I am a college graduate and that I like what I do for a living! Well, this semester is the second semester of my "Junior" year. I am taking Survey Contemporary I. D., Lighting Design, Commercial Design, AND business practices. So far so good. I think that I am going to really like my Lighting class, it is really interesting how lighting has an effect on how you feel or what kind of mood you are in. I also like my Business practices class, we are learning ADA codes and such things, pretty important stuff!! Well I will keep you all updated!! I promise!!

Perspectives--
We are learning one-point and two-point perspective. The first half of the semester we have been working on one-point...here are some pictures of the pictures :)
Drawing one: Fireplace wall
Step one: grid the floorplan and place boxes where the furniture goes...
Step 2: carve the furniture out of the boxes...
Step 3: copy to Vellum (nice paper) and crop the drawing out...

We're all laughing with God
Almost half way through the semester and I am just now getting around to telling you about it!! shame on me! Any way, I am only taking 12 hours this semester, Marketing (online) and Residential one, History of Interiors, and Interior Design Visual Presentations one (Rendering). Rendering is going to be my hardest class because I am not very good at drawing so the class is going to be a challenge for me but that's nothing really new. I am not sure what Residential I is all about yet, I've learned a lot but I'm not really sure what the focal point of the class is. My classes seem to be going OK, my professors seem to be a little scattered but that could be because CIDA is coming in just a few weeks to renew our certification so they are all really stressed. I already have my Marketing midterm this week!! It doesn't seem like it is time for midterms!! I applied to work in the office at my apartment complex, I had a group interview last week and I got called back yesterday for a personal interview today!! I hope I get the job so that I can stop working at CB I am just really tired of serving. Serving is harder on your body than you would think. The training coordinator was talking to me on Sunday and she said that she served a few days last week and she went home and was SO tired, she said she forgot how tiring serving can be!! I need something less stressful, I am stressed out enough with school and then I put myself through the stress of serving...I'm crazy. So I am pretty excited about everything right now and I can't wait for Santa to be here!!
On a non-Interior Design note, Last week, as I was pulling into my apartment complex, Wally from total axxess (Wayfm) was talking about how we some times treat God like a vending machine. We put in our prayer, expect him to fulfill that prayer and when it isn’t fulfilled…we get mad at the machine, kicking and shaking it, trying to get that prayer out. He discusses how it is a vicious circle, we give God total control of our lives but then a few weeks later we try to control it and yet again get frustrated. He then admits, this may not be a common thing but that is what happens to me and I wanted to call him and say NO that happens to me too!! I just can’t seem to give God total control! I recently declared (again) that I am going to stop controlling my life so much and let God’s plan run its course, hopefully this time I can take a step forward in this process instead of 2 steps back. I am trying so hard to have things the way I want them, WHEN I want them and it is killing me!! You can’t fight God’s will. God’s plan is the only plan and we tend to forget that.
The radio dj then ended the speech with a song that I found amusing and delightful:
“Laughing with” by Regina Spektor
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’re starving or freezing or so very poor
No one laughs at God
When the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God
When it’s gotten real late
And their kid’s not back from the party yet
No one laughs at God
When their airplane start to uncontrollably shake
No one’s laughing at God
When they see the one they love, hand in hand with someone else
And they hope that they’re mistaken
No one laughs at God
When the cops knock on their door
And they say we got some bad news, sir
No one’s laughing at God
When there’s a famine or fire or flood
*Chorus*
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ‘bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious
Ha ha
Ha ha
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’ve lost all they’ve got
And they don’t know what for
No one laughs at God on the day they realize
That the last sight they’ll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one’s laughing at God when they’re saying their goodbyes
But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us

Digital Portfolio for Summer Class:Photoshop/SketchUp
It is finally over!!! YAY!! It has been a long 5 weeks but I can honestly say that I am glad I got this class over with over the summer, short and sweet! Since everything I did was on the computer I have found it hard to find a way to post pictures so that all of you can view them BUT then my teacher had us do a "Digital Portfolio" that included all of our work from this summer!! We made it into a .pdf file and are now able to email it to whomever. However, I chose to put it on here for everyone to see!! We had 2 final projects and a digital portfolio project...here is the digital portfolio of all my work I did this summer! (You can click on the pictures to get a better view of them, some of my text is kind of small, or it could just be my computer screen, just a good piece of info for the loved ones)
ENJOY!!

Now for my last 25 days of summer :) work Thursday through Sunday and then Home to Franklin for some overdue family and boyfriend time every week until we go to Michigan for Lauren and Tim's wedding and THEN my 21st birthday!! Yay!
God Bless.
Thank you for reading.

Photoshop--Week 3
Greetings from the planet Photoshop!!
I am finishing up my third of five weeks of class and I have to say, it is going much better than the first week. It was hard in the beginning because I had never had ANY experience with Photoshop. I had no idea where any of the tools were or how to do anything. Monday and Tuesday of this week we worked on our Photoshop final project, which included three elevations and a floor plan of a Kitchen that were originally drawn in Auto CAD. We had to bring them into Photoshop and add cabinet doors, counter top texture, wood grain on the cabinet facing, refrigerators, stoves, ovens, microwaves, ect. It was time consuming but some what easy, once I chose the cabinet doors, I took a sample of the wood grain from the door and added it to the cabinet facings to all the elevations. The counter tops were the same through out as well as the wall coverings and the crown molding. So really, it is rather simple for a final project. However, it was still very time consuming. At the end of class today, I had finished 3 elevations. Tomorrow (Wednesday) we are starting the second half of the class-Sketchup-so tomorrow after class is over, I hope to finish up my Photoshop project, which is due on Monday. I can't wait for this class to be over. It has been a lot of fun learning but I'm ready for it to be August. There are so many things happening in August!! For one, I'm moving on August 16th to my new, clean, Bridgette free apartment and then I have Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays to visit with my family that I haven't seen in like a month. THEN Lauren's wedding on August 29th and the fall semester on August 31st...THEN my 21st birthday!!! I am super excited about that!! Plus a few other surprises in August :)
Well that is all for now, I hope all is well with my readers and I can't wait to see you soon!
Love Always,
Emily
P.S. I haven't printed any of my photoshop work yet, so I can not post any of it but I am hoping to get some pictures up soon, so stay patient!! Thank you!
Love.

Summer Classes-
Hello!!
It has been way to long since my last post, I have been busy working!! I had my textiles class in June and it went well, I pulled out an A in that class. However, I am now in Photoshop/Sketchup and I want to cry, just a little bit. I kind of knew it was going to be hard after a senior in my textiles class told me that the only way I could get through Photoshop/Sketchup is with my bible but I underestimated her exaggeration. We are practically teaching ourselves...from a book. My teacher will "lecture" (roughly show us) what we will be "learning" in the chapter for the day and then she lets us get to work doing the exercises for the chapter. It has gotten better, since I now know where most of the tools are but the first few days were ROUGH. The book would say "hold down the ctrl key and click the Add Mask Layer at the bottom of the layers palette" doesn't sound that hard to the average Photoshop user but when you don't know what the heck the layers palette is or that these tiny little buttons on the very bottom of this "layers palette" even exist, this task is some what difficult. The first full day of working in Photoshop began at 9 AM after an hour lecture of how to begin in Photoshop, and ended at 3 pm. After 6 hours of work, I finally finished all 23 exercises AND the DIY (Do Independently Yours-a little thing my teacher made up to torture us. Just kidding, in actuality, it is an assignment that uses the skills that we "learned" in the chapter. For example, the first day we had to create 3 greeting cards using the skills of a pattern, a mask, a gradient and a knockout. By the time I had finished all the exercises, I had a small understanding of how to do use a pattern and a mask, however the gradient and the knockout I was lost. So of course, I looked it up on google and found a wonderful website with tutorials about these, and many other lessons. Today, was day number 2 of week 2, however yesterday (day 1 of week 2) my teacher was sick so we did not do any exercises but had a reading assignment. I spent the day catching up on sleep and watching movies (I had already read the chapter for that day). So today we did what we were suppose to do yesterday, but tonight we must read the chapter that we should have done today (Chapter 6) PLUS the chapter that we are suppose to do tomorrow (Chapter 9). It is a lot of reading, but there is only one exercise in Chapter 9. So my optimistic teacher is cramming 2 days into one tomorrow in hopes to give us Thursday to do our Photoshop project, which I have no idea what that will entail. I have a better handle on what Photoshop is and it is really cool to see what you can do with it but it is going to be a long 3 and a half weeks.
Today, we took a floor plan from CAD and brought it into Photoshop to add the ceramic tile, the mahogany counter tops, the bar stool texture, the carpet, etc. to render the floor plan. This is why Photoshop is being used more rapidly in the Interior Design field, we can take the floor plan, or elevation of a room, and bring in the EXACT carpet, wall covering, couch, table, etc. to give the client a better idea of what the space will look like, rather than a hand drawn, rough idea of what the room may look like. As much as they try we can not replicate the exact texture of a certain carpet or wall covering. I'll be learning how to do that in the fall, I'm not particularly looking forward to that.
Well, I guess I'm done ranting about how hard school is now, and I'll get back to reading my chapters for tomorrow. I hope you all have a wonderful, blessed day and will post again soon, hopefully with pictures next time. It's hard to post pictures of Computer Aided Drafting stuff but I will try!!
